Salary
The current salary range is $109,808 to $132,527 annually. Placement in the range will depend on qualifications.

About the Building Division
The Building Division is part of the City’s Community Development Department. The department is comprised of three (3) divisions: Building, Planning, and Housing. The building inspection team consists of the Chief Building Official, a Building Inspection Supervisor, and five (5) Building Inspectors.
The Building Inspection team reviews building applications and plans for compliance with State and local building codes and provides inspection and code enforcement services for all types of buildings including but not limited to multi-story office buildings, multi-family buildings, single family homes, restaurants, shopping malls, medical offices, sports malls, churches, and commercial tenant improvement spaces.
About the Position
Under general supervision, this position conducts inspections of commercial and residential construction and provides information and advice to contractors, developers, architects, and owners to ensure compliance with city, state, and federal building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and related codes. This position resolves problems related to code compliance; works at the Planning and Permitting Counter two (2) half-days a week to process over the counter permits, answers questions, and provides guidance to potential applicants; and works indoors and outdoors. The work involves some physical activity and there is exposure to hazardous conditions at work sites due to uneven terrain and unfinished structures.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is self-motivated; able to work independently and as part of a team; and will have experience working in construction or building trades and/or as a building inspector for a city or county jurisdiction.
Representative Duties
Conducts inspections of new and existing commercial and residential construction, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and related installations for hazardous and safety conditions to ensure compliance with the California Building Code, and local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
Checks quality of construction and related materials and methods.
Records/logs all inspection requests and results; posts and records stop work orders.
Issues warning citations and correction notices.
Prepares and maintains required records and reports.
Utilizes computer to perform data entry functions.
Reviews plans and specifications for conformity with local, state, and federal laws, codes, and regulations.
Issues building, pool, solar, demolition and miscellaneous over the counter permits.
Issues certificates of occupancy.
Confers with and advises contractors, owners, architects, engineers, and the general public regarding interpretation and application of building code and other applicable laws, ordinances, and regulations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of the California building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, energy, fire, accessibility, and housing codes, ordinances and laws, and related local, State, and Federal codes, laws, and regulations.
Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, and standards involved in building construction, repair, and alteration.
Skill in communicating effectively in English both orally and in writing.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
Ability to read and interpret building plans, blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
Ability to maintain accurate and complete records.
Ability to operate various inspection equipment.
Ability to effectively utilize computer applications and technology related to the work.
Requirements
Education
Graduation from high school or equivalent, supplemented by technical training in building inspections and/or the California Building Code.
Experience
A minimum of three (3) years of considerable building construction experience in one or more of the major construction trades such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.
Special Requirements
Possession of, or the ability to obtain during first year of employment, International Code Council (ICC) certification as a Building Inspector, Combination Inspector, or equivalent.
Possession of, or ability to obtain prior to employment, a valid Class C California Driver’s License and a good driving record.
