Description
- The following duties shall only be delegated to the Dental Hygienist under direction with the dentist being present: a. Scaling and root planning of natural and restored teeth using hand instrumentation, rotary instruments, and ultrasonic devices. b. Performing an initial examination of teeth and surrounding tissues, including the charting of carious lesions, periodontal pockets, or other abnormal conditions to assist the Dentist in the diagnosis. c. Polishing of natural and restored teeth. d. Subgingival irrigation or subgingival application of topical schedule VI medications agent.
- The following duties shall be delegated to the Dental Hygienist to perform under general supervision without the dentist being present: a. Routine scaling of natural and restored teeth using hand instrumentation, rotary instruments, and ultrasonic devices. b. Polishing of natural and restored teeth. c. Clinical examination of teeth and surrounding tissues, including the charting of carious lesions, periodontal pockets, or other abnormal conditions for further evaluation and diagnosis by the dentist. d. Subgingival irrigation or subgingival application of topical schedule VI medications agent.
- The following duties shall be delegated to the Dental Hygienist to perform under Remote Supervision, if the Dental Hygienist is privileged, without the dentist being present: a. Routine scaling of natural and restored teeth using hand instrumentation, rotary instruments, and ultrasonic devices. b. Polishing of natural and restored teeth. c. Clinical examination of teeth and surrounding tissues, including the charting of carious lesions, periodontal pockets or other abnormal conditions for further evaluation and diagnoses by the dentist. d. Subgingival irrigation or subgingival application of topical schedule VI medications agent. e. The Dental Hygienist will sign ESRHS' Written Practice Protocol (for standing orders) and communicate all findings to the Chief Dental Officer via an eCW Telephone Encounter.
- Additional Responsibilities of the Dental Hygienist include: a. Implement educational and informative dental and hygiene programs used for preventive and maintenance care with patients. b. Instruct patients in oral hygiene care. c. Clean and prepare instruments for use at the chairside. d. Update patient chart daily/weekly, as needed. e. Make necessary notations in the patient's chart as procedures have been performed and signed. f. Schedule recall visits, whenever possible, at the end of an appointment/after patient care. g. Take and archive radiographs electronically. h. Assist with sterilization procedures. i. Follow ESRHS' OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens policy, including proper disposal of sharps and contaminated waste, and follow universal precautions for all patients and procedures.
- Other duties and tasks as directed by the Chief Dental Officer.
Requirements
-Graduate of an accredited program approved by the American Dental Association, successful completion of the Dental Hygiene National Board, Dental Hygiene SRTA exam, and licensed through the Virginia Board of Dentistry.
Requires the ability to perform scaling and root debridement, removal of all stains, patient education, tobacco counseling, and work with all age/minority populations.
-Requires the ability to use clinical assessment skills and perception to determine the needs of the patient while working with the dentist.
-Must be energetic, flexible, and self-motivated with strong attention to detail.
-Must have good communication, teamwork, and computer skills.
-Must complete and maintain all recertification requirements for continued licensure and/ or certification, and retain updated copies as applicable
-Must maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for all life cycles.
-Must demonstrate excellent internal and external customer service skills.
-Provide coverage at other centers or events on short notice when needed.
-Participate in all Migrant Events and Late Nights.
-Certification as an Interpreter is preferred, and the ability to provide bilingual patient care is a plus.
